  Next in our Black History Month profiles: Griffin Rodgers '76 MD'79. Dr. Rodgers is the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), where he oversees a staff of 630 and a budget of $2.25 billion. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Rodgers developed a passion for medicine and science after going on home visits with his mother, a public health nurse. As a teen, Dr. Rodgers watched 3 friends suffer and die from sickle cell disease. He trained as a hematologist and focused his research on #sicklecell. His research contributed to the development of the first effective, FDA-approved drug for the treatment of sickle cell, hydroxyurea. He also oversaw a clinical trial using stem cell transplants that reversed the disease in a majority of patients, which could open a new potential avenue for therapeutics. Dr. Rodgers' vision for NIDDK includes supporting pivotal research as well as bring in a steady pool of diverse investigators from all backgrounds. During the pandemic, he's joined with his fellow director Dr. Anthony Fauci to provide info to the public about #covid-19. The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) honored Dr. Rodgers with the Research Service Award, which recognizes individuals whose work has significantly advanced gastroenterological science and research.
