I worked in law enforcement in Washington state near Seattle for two years prior to medical school. My mentors there thought I would be crazy not to take the opportunity to go to med school. I think it’s very helpful for emergency medicine. It’s helpful when I’m coming into situations with very limited information and I have to make decisions based on inadequate information. And also just understanding the different walks of life that people come from.

I started watching the TV show ER when I was 11 years old and I considered other fields while I was in medical school but never really had a doubt that I wanted to do emergency medicine. I tried to keep an open mind because I didn’t want to be someone who came in aiming for one thing and just stuck with it, but ultimately I liked emergency medicine the best. I did my undergrad at Brown as well–Brown Class of 2009. I did my undergraduate studies in Hispanic studies and human biology—I speak Spanish. It’s very helpful in emergency medicine.
