Nationwide, researchers are experiencing a broad shift marked by fewer grant opportunities, limited access to funding, and tightened budgets. This shift has had an impact on Brown’s biomedical community, and as we navigate the challenges it brings, we are steadfast in our commitment to pursuing lifesaving research and innovation.
Under the leadership of Mukesh K. Jain, MD, dean of medicine and biological sciences and senior vice president for health affairs, Brown’s Division of Biology and Medicine is united by a shared vision to transform health through science. Philanthropy plays an important role in helping Brown remain flexible yet focused in times of change—and the loyalty of our alumni, parents, and friends has been a critical component of our approach.
With renewed support for flexible-use funds like the Dean’s Fund for Biology and Medicine, the Division is charting a thoughtful path to maintain promising research endeavors and the experts behind them.
“I saw a gift to the Dean’s Fund as a way to make a tangible difference at Brown during a time of serious funding cuts, whilst making my contribution to the groundbreaking research originating from my alma mater,” says Carl J. Saphier ’88 MD’92.
Gifts like these enable leadership to respond to the Division’s most pressing needs, to sustain people and programs with the greatest potential for growth and impact, and to fill a critical need for projects that may be facing delays or disruptions due to instability in federal funding.
“I knew that making a gift to the Dean’s Fund to support groundbreaking research would help not just Brown, but people all over the world,” says Steven S. Shin ’95 MMSc’97 MD’99.
This dedication to better care—locally and globally—is what keeps Brown moving forward.
