Lasting Tribute

Brown Medicine, Winter 2016 Thank you so much for publishing a short obituary of my partner, Professor Richard A. Ellis, in your journal (Winter 2016). He cared deeply about Brown University and bequeathed a significant part of his estate to his Brown scholarship. I was very happy to see his colleagues at the celebration of his life on August 14, 2016, and I also received notes and telephone calls from his students.

Thank you and my best wishes to all of you.

  Dr. Dioscaris Garcia, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, took the stage at Capitol Hill to discuss pathways to greater representation in biomedical research. At the sixth annual Dominicans on the Hill event, Dr. Garcia highlighted the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in scientific fields and shared his personal journey as one of Brown's first Dominican American faculty members. “When I go to speak at these panels, my aim is to ensure I am not the last,” he said. “I want to continue my mission of providing a far easier path for those who are following me in my career.”From mentoring hundreds of students to spearheading initiatives like DORSAL and INDEX-Salud, Dr. Garcia is dedicated to paving the way for future generations.
