A new exhibit challenges gender stereotypes in medicine.
On the eve of International Women’s Day in March, the Office of Women in Medicine and Science celebrated the official opening of the #WallsDoTalk exhibit at The Warren Alpert Medical School. Julie Silver, MD (second from left), originated #WallsDoTalk in 2017, challenging medical schools to rethink honor walls that depict their founders and star faculty and may inadvertently reinforce medicine as a male- and white-dominated field. The Medical School’s #WallsDoTalk exhibit features artwork contributed by students, including Cynthia Peng MD’20 (far right); and portraits of women faculty, such as Simone Thavaseelan RES’10, MD (far left), from throughout the School’s history. Associate Dean for Gender Equity Katherine Sharkey, MD, PhD (second from right), and OWIMS facilitated the exhibit, with pieces selected after a community-wide call for submissions.
