Nancy Alyson Shaw ’80 MD’83, 62, died May 7.

Born in Providence, she completed her internal medicine residency at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven and returned to Rhode Island to work for Fatima Hospital and Woonsocket Hospital. Fond of travel, she became a locum tenens physician and worked in Arizona, Kentucky, and Georgia, recalling them as the best experiences of her life as she explored the US and met many wonderful people.

Dr. Shaw settled in North Carolina for 20 years, where she established hospitalist programs for Cabarrus Memorial Hospital in Concord and Boice-Willis Clinic in Rocky Mount. In 2012 she was recruited to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia, GA, where she worked as a hospitalist until her death.

She played piano since age 7 and loved reading and exercise, was known for her compassion for people and animals; she was an advocate for the Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society (SOAPS) of Vidalia and dearly loved her 10 pet cats. Dr. Shaw also loved her patients and nursing family at Meadows Regional Medical Center. Donations may be made in her memory to SOAPS, PO Box 210, Vidalia, GA 30475.
