How did you decide to become a doctor?
I was 17 when I applied to the PLME program at Brown, and like most of the decisions a teenager makes, it was guided mostly by my gut. My mom was a practicing physician in Poland and is a physician assistant in the US, and she was a strong influence in my decision to pursue medicine.
How did you choose your specialty?
When starting medical school I had all but ruled out a surgical career, but over the last few years I have been fortunate to have phenomenal mentors to convince me otherwise. Early on I began shadowing and working with Anthony Caldamone [’72 MMS’75 MD’75, P’06, professor of surgery (urology) and of pediatrics], who showed me how meaningful and exciting a career in the field can be. The longer I worked with the faculty here, and the more time I spent with patients in and outside of the operating room, I became convinced that urology is the right fit for me.
