How did you choose your specialty?
For many years I wrote for an online magazine for LGBTQ women about current events, TV, and fashion. I also answered questions from readers seeking advice. I was concurrently doing genetics research and the intersection of these fields brought a clear, stepwise approach to my recommendations that readers seemed to appreciate. When I entered medical school, my inbox was suddenly flooded with questions about women’s health.
When I rotated through ob/gyn it immediately felt like the perfect fit. I love the balance of surgery and primary care as well as the longitudinal relationships I will be able to form with my patients. I bounded out of bed during my ob/gyn clerkship knowing that we would perform a hysterectomy, deliver a baby, and place an IUD all before noon. I admired my attending ob/gyns, operating as they executed careful planning with technical precision, all while serving as advocates for their patients.
How have life and school prepared you for the Match?
The Match is scary and exciting but most of all it’s a very long wait. I am not by nature a patient person, but medical school has taught me that sometimes the most important thing you can do is quietly and patiently wait to see what happens next.
What are you most excited for after Match Day?
I’m going to Disney World! No, really, I’m going to Disney World.
