Locked-down kids stay on the ball thanks to a med student.
When New Orleans removed public basketball hoops during the COVID-19 lockdown, many kids—like the Davis family here—were stuck at home with nothing to do. Luckily Gabriel Onor Jr. MD’21, left, had the assist. The NOLA native and former high school and college athlete teamed up with his brother Michael Okoronkwo, MD, and his LSU Medical Center colleague Keyana Varnado, MD, to create the Drive and Dish Foundation, and personally delivered balls and goals to isolated children so they could get outside and stay active.
“Kids are in a crucial time of their development,” says Onor, an aspiring orthopedic surgeon. “We wanted to encourage people to socially distance but still be able to play with their families.”
